Applications of Superconductivity in Digital Circuits


Superconductivity can provide a very high speed and low power electronics circuits. Recent studies on the single flux quantum logic circuits show that large scale superconductive digital devices can built. Some of the devices have been demonstrated already to exceed the performance of the existing devices made with current semiconductor technology and the insertion of these devices into the practical application is being pursued. Most of the digital circuit development efforts have been limited to the low Tc materials, waiting for the development of reliable high Tc Josephson junction fabrication technology. Continuous developments in the quality of high Tc thin films resulted to a rapid progress in the high Tc analog devices. These circuits are targetting faster digital signal processing and faster computing. These single flux quantum logic circuits are expandable to the high Tc materials. So far only a few simple circuits have been attempted to build with high Tc materia!
