The role of quantum mechanics in providing the basic foundations for generating the mainstream technologies is briefly reviewed. Specifically, the advent and continued evolution of semiconductor and quantum electronic devices are discussed from a historical perspective, together with its impact on IT and IR. The physical and quantum mechanical issues entailed in the down-scaling the electronic devices into nano regimes are highlighted. The feedback effects of IT evolution on science in general and on the interdisciplinary science education in particular are discoursed. Finally the possible role of the quantum mechanics course for naturally bridging differing disciplines into a coherent body of science is pointed out, together with the changing role of science education.
