Multiferroic Thin Film Heterostructures
■ Abstract
The
coupling between ferroelectric and ferromagnetic order parameters in multiferroic thin films is a fascinating prospect for fundamental scientific research and
potential multifunctional device applications. Among many multiferroic
materials, BiFeO3 has potential for the development of novel
spintronic devices as its unrivaled room-temperature multiferroic properties can
be exploited in exchange-coupled magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). Until now,
the fundamental problem in implementing these devices has been that exchange
interactions between BiFeO3 and a ferromagnetic overlayer have been
observed only in the presence of domain walls. We now have new evidence
of an intrinsic exchange interaction between monodomain BiFeO3 and a cobalt ferromagnetic overlayer that is not mediated
by domain walls. We have developed a quantitative understanding of the
magnetoelectric properties of monodomain BiFeO3 films using
advanced synchrotron techniques (XMCD and XMLD). Such an approach would provide
the basis for a deterministic and scalable device design that has been difficult
in domain-wall-based approaches due to the inherent difficulty in precisely
controlling domain wall formation and movement.
