ABSTRACT:
size=3>Processing of information often
leads to mathematical problems that are intriguing enough to inspire
mathematical community. A good example of such an interaction can be found in
the problem posed by Claude Shannon in his famous 1948 paper “A Mathematical
Theory of Communications”. This problem addresses the issue of how to handle the
errors inevitably arising in the process of communications, and has evolved into
a branch of mathematics called coding theory.
There are other examples; a
notable one is the problem of sending a big chunk of data (like typical
multimedia signals) over a communication channel of limited capacity (like
internet). This issue is usually referred to as the problem of signal
compression.
Another example can be found in the problem of information
security, increasingly more important in online commerce. The mathematical
theory underlying this issue is now called cryptography.
The talk will be
given in a leisurely style, and no prior knowledge on the topics will be
assumed.
