Complex systems analysis of anesthetic induction
and emergence
* Speaker: UnCheol Lee ( University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor)

* Date & Time : June 16 (Wed.) 10:30 ~ 11:30 am
* ABSTRACT :
General anesthesia induces various states of consciousness
under well controlled conditions. There is debate as to whether losing
consciousness during general anesthesia is a continuous process or a
binary process. In this talk, potential mechanisms for the loss of
consciousness will be explained based on multivariate EEG analysis.
Anesthetic-induced unconsciousness is associated with (1) reduced
information integration capacity in the brain and (2) selective
inhibition of the feedback information processing in the frontoparietal
network. Finally, I will introduce another possible explanation based on
graph theoretical analysis, which supports the idea that there is a
distinct neurobiology for anesthetic induction and emergence.
