With the rapid development of quantum technologies, the quantum mechanical nature of physical systems is becoming an increasingly important part of future industrial technology. It is our effort to apply the in-depth knowledge of atomic physics and ultrafast laser optics for developing quantum mechanical ways of transporting and processing information in and between atoms and light. Certain quantum systems like Rydberg atoms and semiconductor atomic structures are the best test tubes in which to attempt programmable quantum control for quantum computing may be feasible. We discuss the use of such systems as quantum data registers and the use of terahertz ultrafast short pulses for processing quantum information and implementing quantum algorithms.
